Pondering adult education classes… should Rider learn Mandarin to help my tome? My Phil Prof possibly spent a year in China extending her language knowledge. Was there trade between medieval England and China c1250/1350? Would de Brome have been exposed to that? On the other hand should Rider learn Russian cause my Phil Prof possibly spent [...]
Coming soon – as soon as Rider has figured out how to upload it. This appears as an Appendix to the story of Aberford School but you might enjoy it as a stand alone article cause it’s a really random snippet.
There’s a piece in our paper today about the growing trend for matured people to take to writing – not always their life stories or experiences – all sorts of writing. A few names were mentioned of folk who’d made it big when much more mature than Rider. Yippee! The creative process doesn’t necessarily atrophy [...]
Might be my title for my next tome – but I get so interested in research that creative writing seems to elude me. Perhaps I don’t have it in me Writing more about the village is postponed at the moment too but Rider is pursuing one project – to try to set up a [...]
Happy New (Decade) Year. Today being Friday it’s an in-between sort of day. Cold and frosty, Nana for lunch, with Writeous Dude having a small plateful on account of having had brekkie a short while earlier (bed at 4am after celebrating New Year at a party). Delving further into Christmas books. Several on the medieval period [...]
Good turnout for the Xmas Fair – I was very surprised and touched when Mrs Heggie publicly thanked me for my tome and gave me some flowers wasn’t that nice. I gave her a cheque for £350 and there will be a bit more to come in dribs and drabs. Next money-making idea: transferring [...]

Disgraceful Rider to be special guest at school Christmas Gala – isn’t that great. I’ll be giving them a cheque for the profit from the sale of my ‘History of…’. Here’s a taster of what I wrote in Vol I : “When you walk up the little winding lane to Aberford village school, you are [...]
Developed from Calling Cards back in the day. Etiquette dictated that you left your card at a person’s home if you wished to see someone not known to you – you would then either receive one in return or not. If you did it was a signal you were welcome to call. How very civilised [...]
Aberford’s Town Book from 1746 to c1800 is at The Borthwick, York Uni. Mostly accounts of Overseers, Constables, Surveyors, Assessors but the accounts tell a story. Those chaps were kept busy – repairs to the bridge in Main Street (old A1) – to the village stocks and pinfold (stray animals) – riding for warrants to York, Leeds, Wakefield [...]
