How language causes strong reactions and how it changes over time. If you’d been invited to view some tits back in the day you would have gone to the stables to look at carriage horses – also called ‘cattle’. If a coachman was queer, he wouldn’t have been strange or homosexual but somewhat drunk.  Faggot probably still is a type of sausage thingy good to eat but to some it would be an insult like ‘nigger’ would be from the wrong colour of person (though I believe an affectionate term from black guy to black guy). If a man comes from a fairly uneducated, tough, macho background and is closing on 60 then his vocabulary may well be of the ripe reactionary sort when he’s had a few or he’s upset. Mickey Rourke’s language is often ripe and he’s been pilloried for using faggot – he does need to drop the word but I bet if he saw a gay man being attacked he’d help him and he gave a superb cameo performance in drag as a gay prisoner in his wilderness days before The Wrestler.  Maybe he could say ‘wap-john’ instead of pussy or faggot – sounds like a great insult but you’ll have to find out what it means for yourself  :)
