Debut novel ‘Ruby’s Spoon’ by Anna Lawrence Pietroni.  A random pick up at the library which proved to be engrossing. Set in the Black Country of the 1930s. Exotic Isa Fly enters the life of 13 year old Ruby. Isa is on a mission to find her sister – to satisfy her dying father’s wish.  Truda Blick has just inherited the Cradle Cross button factory – on it’s last legs. What is the truth about Isa and what are the strands which join Ruby’s presumed dead grandfather, her would-have-been Aunty Grace – drowned as a baby at sea, and the mysterious female bargee, ‘the Blackbird’.  Will Truda save the factory? Will Ruby’s ambition to get away to sea with Isa Fly come true? Why do the Blackbird and Isa fear and hate each other so much? A wonderfully woven tale which seemed to me to perfectly portray the long gone time and place in which it is set. This author really places the reader there and makes you want to find out ‘what happens next’.  Resolved to continue random choices ….. hope you enjoy this book too.
